Some of the links show them, and I fixed the featured image.I see no reason to believe that loose rushes (or straw) were not strewn on floors in the Medieval period. I bet they could have used the "clean house" helpers back then, huh?Great post. In 1993, the sixth location opened at Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
!If it were me, and I had a dirt floor that would turn to mud every time it would rain I would probably think of putting something more substantial down too. Particularly favored for such a purpose was Acorus calamus (sweet flag), but despite its alternate vernacular name "sweet rush", it is a plant from a different monocot order , Acorales . But otherwise no. It only takes a minute to sign up.Rushes (Juncaceae family) are a sweet smelling, flowering plant that has been used for a number of domestic purposes including flooring material. Medieval Times Life. BrendaGreat! Following the Black Death a limited number of carpets and mats were introduced to replace the floor rushes but floors strewn with straw or rushes were still favoured. I too would love to see citations to help back those statements up…I can’t speak to Martin’s decision to have rushes strewn on the floor. But logically I can’t see anyone braiding mats in their non-existing spare time to throw on the floor when a few pieces of grass would do.I think so too, and upon further research, this rush mat notion might be more accurate:In highland Ethiopia, which retains some extremely ancient social and religious practices (the civilisation of the Ethiopian highlands relates to the Christian civilisation of the eastern Mediterranean), reeds (or fresh grass if reeds are not available)are routinely scattered on the floor, especially at times of celebration and festivals, with sedge being the preferred plant.
Another great post, Eliza. Rushes were, and still are, a type of grass-like plant that, when dried, provides good insulation and protection for simple buildings. She would need to sweep the floors, generally downstairs until those who were sleeping had risen, then she would head upstairs. We think of them as soley decorative, but they also insulated rooms and helped in deading sound so castles would not seem to cavernous as sound bounced off stone walls. The medieval toilet or latrine, then called a privy or garderobe, was a primitive affair, but in a castle, one might find a little more comfort and certainly a great deal more design effort than had been invested elsewhere. It seem like they wouldn’t cause a huge mess, not stay where they were put, etc. What are rushes in medieval castles?
The top treads would be buried in rushes in one passage.Fascinating enquiry on a topic that has long puzzled me too.
They are a plant that grows in or near water. Makes sense to me. (Below right) Carpets/rugs are much preferred yet are a costly item in that period reserving them to the wealthy. The second location opened in Buena Park, California in 1986. By the 1500’s, loose rushes on floors in all but the poorest of homes had given way to woven rush mats, found on floors in even the finest homes. Another wonderful post!!
